A Strawberry Variety Developed in Nara
Asuka Ruby was developed by the Nara Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1992, researchers crossed the varieties Asuka Wave and Nyohō, then selected a promising strain from the resulting seedlings. The new variety was introduced under the name Asuka Ruby in fiscal year 1998.
The strawberries are notable for their large, uniform fruits and abundant juice. Their glossy, vivid scarlet-red skin inspired the name “Ruby,” while the fruit itself has a rounded, conical shape. The flesh is orange-red, with a lighter reddish core. Its attractive shine and appealing color make it especially eye-catching.
Sweet, Juicy, and Highly Valued
Asuka Ruby is appreciated for its high sugar content and good yields. Its plentiful juice creates a refreshing, juicy sensation with every bite, while its well-balanced flavor makes it enjoyable fresh. The combination of sweetness, appearance, and consistent fruit size has earned the variety a strong reputation.
Since Asuka Ruby is not widely available beyond Nara Prefecture, encountering it locally offers an opportunity to taste a regional specialty that can be difficult to find elsewhere in Japan.
