National Asuka Historical Park

The place where the palace capital was established in the 7th century

This park preserves the natural and cultural heritage of Asuka, the ancient capital of Japan, the birthplace of the centralized Ritsuryo State, and tells the history of the Asuka Period (592 - 710).

The park, with a total area of approximately 60 hectares, where many historical sites of the Asuka period have been excavated, is divided into five areas: the Takamatsuzuka area, Ishibutai area, Amagashigaoka area, Shukudo area, and Kitora tumulus area.

The Takamatsuzuka area includes the Asuka History Park Pavilion, the Takamatsuzuka Kofun Tumulus famous for its mural paintings of groups of men and women, the Takamatsuzuka Mural Museum where visitors can view reproduction murals, and the Hoshiyado Plaza with its starry night motif.

This area is easily accessible, and as the gateway to Asuka, the park pavilion introduces Asuka’s historical sites and facilities.

The Shukudo area is located in the area of Mount Miwa and Mount Fuguri, commonly known as the southern part of Asuka Kokyo, and a part of the foot of the mountain that follows.

The park has an observatory overlooking the Asuka ancient capital with the three mountains of Yamato in the background and the terraced rice field scenery of the Inabuchi district, called Oku-Asuka, as well as a lawn area and a walking path leading to the Ishibutai district.

In the Ishibutai area, there is the Ishibutai Kofun, the largest square burial mound in Japan, which is said to be the tomb of Soga Umako. The surrounding gently terraced rice paddy terrain is utilized to create a lawn square, and the Asuka Wind Stage can also be used for events.

In the area surrounding the Kitora Kofun Tumulus, there is the Kitora Kofun Mural Experience Hall, the Hall of the Four Gods, and the Kofun Tumulus Appreciation Plaza, which have been developed so that many people can enjoy and spend time experiencing the history, culture, and climate of Asuka. Visitors can enjoy programs and events such as farming and crafts in the beautiful natural environment.

In the Amagashi-oka area, there is an observation plaza (148 meters above sea level) where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Asuka and the beautiful landscape of Yamato Kunihara, including the settlement of Asuka Kokyo (Asuka Village), the Fujiwara Capital site (Kashihara City), the Kongo mountain range in the distance, the three mountains of Yamato, and the tucked-in Aogaki.

Part of the park path (about 2.3 km) is a Manyo botanical garden path where visitors can enjoy observing 40 varieties of Manyo plants mentioned in the Manyoshu (Anthology of Myriad Leaves), Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters), and Nihonshoki (Chronicles of Japan).
